Creative Dance Project for Adults 18+ | All Abilities Welcome

Join Queensland Ballet for a joyful and inclusive creative experience that invites seniors, active adults and community members aged 18+ of all mobilities to come together, move, connect and create.

No prior dance or creative experience is needed - just a willingness to explore, share ideas and be part of the process.

Through a series of movement and creative workshops, participants will work alongside a Queensland Ballet Teaching Artist to create a new and completely original dance work. Developed through shared ideas, personal reflections and creative exploration, the work will be shaped by the people taking part and the unique space in which it will be created and performed.

This year, the project includes a special site-specific element. Participants will be guided through a choreographic process that responds to a particular performance space within Redland Performing Arts Centre. Together, the group will explore how movement can interact with the architecture, features, atmosphere and possibilities of the space, creating a dance work that is unique to this group, this project and this venue.

Participants will be introduced to an accessible choreographic process including movement warm-ups, creative exploration, stimulus and idea generation, movement composition, rehearsal and performance preparation. Along the way, there will be opportunities to contribute movement, ideas and perspectives, with the final work emerging collaboratively from the group.

The project begins with a 3-hour introductory session, where participants will get to know one another, explore movement and creativity, and take their first steps into the choreographic process. This isn’t a series of ballet classes - rather than learning set ballet steps, you’ll explore creative movement and contribute your own ideas to the work.  Further rehearsals will build and develop the work, leading towards a final performance at Redland Performing Arts Centre.

We warmly welcome creative thinkers, curious minds, people who love to move (or would like to move more), and artists of all kinds and abilities. Participants should expect to move in both familiar and new ways, explore the possibilities of a unique performance space, contribute their ideas and be part of a supportive and collaborative creative experience.

FAQs

What is Site-Specific Dance?

Site-specific dance is movement created in, and in response to, a particular place. Instead of creating a dance first and finding a space for it later, guided by your Queensland Ballet Teaching Artists, you’ll explore the unique features, atmosphere and possibilities of a space at Redland Performing Arts Centre and use these as inspiration for movement.

You might discover ways to move through, around or alongside the space, respond to what you see and notice, or find creative possibilities you hadn’t expected.

There’s no right or wrong way to do it - your ideas and discoveries will help shape a dance work that could only be created here, by this group.

What to Expect

Never taken part in a project like this before? That’s absolutely fine! The Performance Project is designed to be welcoming, accessible and enjoyable for everyone, with no previous dance experience required.

The project includes:

  • A 3-hour introductory session to meet the group, get comfortable with movement and begin exploring ideas together.
  • Fortnightly 1 hour 15-minute rehearsals to develop, practise and shape the dance work.
  • Physical warm-ups** designed to get you moving comfortably and ready to create.
  • Guided movement activities where your Teaching Artist will introduce simple ways to explore movement and generate ideas.
  • Conversation and connection - getting to know the people you are creating with and sharing thoughts, stories and perspectives.
  • Creative exploration - trying out ideas, making movement together and discovering how these can come together as a performance.

You won’t be expected to know steps, perform solo or have a dance background. Your ideas, curiosity and willingness to participate are what make the project work.

Why Participate?

Try something new - step outside your usual routine and discover what you can create.

  • Move your way - explore movement in an accessible, supportive environment.
  • Meet new people - connect, share and create with others in your community.
  • Have your ideas heard - your experiences, perspectives and creativity will help shape the work.
  • Create something unique - be part of making a dance work that belongs to this group, this project and this place.
  • Be part of the process and performance - experience the excitement of bringing your creation to life in a live showing.
