A rare first glimpse into this new play.
Join us for an intimate, early-stage encounter with a powerful story of memory, survival and female resilience.
The Play
The Shoe‑Horn Sonata brings together two women, fifty years after World War II, as they are interviewed for a television documentary about their experiences during the fall of Singapore.
Through memory, humour and confrontation, the play reveals the largely unacknowledged story of Australian and British women who survived the evacuation and subsequent imprisonment under Japanese forces.
As their shared history unfolds, the play becomes both a tribute and a reckoning — examining trauma, survival, friendship and the way nations remember war.
About the Play Reading
This Play Reading, presented by Theatre Redlands, invites audiences into the early creative life of the work.
With scripts in hand and minimal staging, a play reading foregrounds language, story and performance, offering a rare opportunity to hear the play and engage with its themes in a raw and immediate form.
A Play Reading sits somewhere between theatre and an audiobook. It’s ideal for people who enjoy listening to storytelling, language, and character rather than spectacle. You’ll hear how actors begin to mine the script for characterisation, how relationships start to form, and how the director begins shaping the play.
