Redland Performing Arts Centre is proud to present the Black Square Quartet Concert Series
AUTOGRAPHS: Beethoven and Green
Sunday 21 June, 3pm
In celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday, this program for string quartet will open with String Quartet No. 6. Considered an ‘early’ quartet, this piece was written when Beethoven was in his twenties. In stark, stylistic contrast, this will be followed by his iconic Grosse Fugue – arguably one of Beethoven’s greatest and most ground-breaking works, written in the final years of his life. Australian composer, Thomas Green’s String Quartet No.1 will complete the program.
THREE BY FIVE: Black Square Quartet with Dance
Sunday 13 September, 3pm
Three by Five will feature three, five-movement suites inspired by dance. Australian Carl Vine’s quirky Knips Suite will open the concert, followed by Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff’s neo-Baroque Dance Suite Five Pieces for String Quartet. Bringing the concert to a magnificent end will be a world premiere performance of a nw suite for string quartet and dance, commissioned by Black Square Quartet (BSQ) and composed by Brisbane’s own Thomas Green. Prize winners from the dance discipline of the Redlands Eisteddfod will join forces with BSQ to bring these unique works to life.
